Aviation Milestone: The First Transatlantic Flight

On May 27, 1919, history was made when a U.S. Navy seaplane
successfully completed the first transatlantic flight,
revolutionizing the future of aviation. The journey began on May
8, 1919, when the Curtiss NC-4, one of three seaplanes in the
mission, took off from Rockaway Beach, New York. Despite the
perilous journey marked by adverse weather and mechanical
challenges, the NC-4 triumphed, demonstrating the potential for
long-distance air travel. The flight covered approximately 4,500
miles with stops in Newfoundland, the Azores, and Lisbon, before
reaching its final destination in Plymouth, England.

The success of the NC-4's transatlantic voyage symbolized a
turning point in aviation history, showcasing the capabilities of
aircraft beyond short-haul flights. This pioneering achievement
not only captured the world's imagination but also laid the
groundwork for future advancements in aviation technology and
international air travel. The NC-4's crew, led by Lieutenant
Commander Albert C. Read, became instant heroes, their daring
feat inspiring aviators and engineers to push the boundaries of
what was possible. This historic flight paved the way for the era
of global connectivity we experience today, highlighting the
remarkable progress in aviation over the past century.
