Why do some people think that it is controversial to require a COVID vaccine before people receive a transplant?

[link removed] The real question is why would these folks trust their doctors to do an organ transplant, but not trust ( [link removed] ) what they say about vaccines?

The usual suspects...

Why Do You Need to Get a COVID Vaccine Before Receiving a Transplant?

Of course, the reason you need to be fully vaccinated, including being up-to-date on your COVID vaccines, when you get a transplant ( [link removed] ) , is that you will be immunocompromised ( [link removed] ) and at high risk for all of these diseases!

"COVID-19 is especially fatal for immune suppressed transplant patients. Outbreaks could shut down centers, affecting services for all patients. Vaccination before transplantation leads to heightened immunity that lasts after transplantation, which decreases adverse organ outcomes, sickness among staff, and infection spread."

> Should Patients Who Refuse COVID Vaccination Be Denied Transplantation Eligibility?

So if you are lucky enough to get a transplant, typically a life-saving treatment, why would you want to take any unnecessary risks ( [link removed] ) by not getting vaccinated and protected against COVID?

[link removed]
Anti-vaccine influencers ( [link removed] ) who give advice to decline vaccination are a disaster for everyone, especially those who are high risk, like those who need or have gotten a transplant.

Tragically, because of anti-vaccine misinformation ( [link removed] ) , there are people who miss out on potentially life saving transplants because they refuse to get vaccinated.

> "Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is effective in reducing the risk of severe disease and death among transplant patients."
>
> Update on Covid-19: vaccines, timing of transplant after COVID-19 infection and use of positive donors

Why is this an issue? Mostly because there are simply not enough organs available to get transplants for everyone who needs one.

> "Regardless of whether a strict requirement policy is implemented, all programs have a moral duty to ensure the highest levels of vaccination among patients, and especially transplant candidates, possible. Ultimately, justice is not served by the futile transplantation of scarce organs."
>
> Should Patients Who Refuse COVID Vaccination Be Denied Transplantation Eligibility?

That's why transplant programs do everything they can to help make sure every transplant they do has the best chance of success.

> "We strongly recommend that all eligible children and adult transplant candidates and recipients be vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine that is approved or authorized in their jurisdiction and according to the schedule as recommended by their regulatory authorities."
>
> Joint Statement about COVID-19 Vaccination in Organ Transplant Candidates and Recipients

That includes mandating vaccines ( [link removed] ) so that those who get a transplant have a lower risk of getting sick with a vaccine-preventable disease and later rejecting their transplant.

> "Among kidney transplant recipients, the mortality rate with COVID-19 was reported to be as high as 25% early in the pandemic and more recent reports estimate a death rate of 16.9%-21% among symptomatic kidney transplant recipients. When administered prior to transplant, vaccines offer important protection from severe illness following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection."

And that's because vaccines are safe ( [link removed] ) , with few risks ( [link removed] ) , and are necessary ( [link removed] ) , especially if you need a transplant!

[link removed] Lots of people are waiting for organ transplants... And most people make the choice to trust their transplant team and get vaccinated and protected so that they can get on the transplant list, hopefully get their transplant, and have the best chance of success.

Don't let anti-vaccine influencers scare you ( [link removed] ) away from vaccinated and getting a life-saving transplant with their misinformation and propaganda ( [link removed] ) .
