Rightwing crowd turns on Trump in stunning display
The Libertarian convention appears to have had enough of Donald Trump dominating the conversation — and they sent him a loud and very explicit message that he is NOT going to want to hear.

Vox's Ian Millhiser publishes brutal, withering takedown of Samuel Alito
Ian Millhiser has written the definitive take down of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, going on in great detail just how contradictory, illogical, and deeply radical his legal opinions over the years have been. But he saves the real dagger for the end, writing, "Samuel Alito is one of the worst judges of his generation. He rejects the very basic idea that courts must decide cases based on the law, and not based on their partisan views. He routinely embarrasses himself in oral arguments, and in his published opinions, with legal reasoning that no sensible lawyer can take seriously. And he even tries to distort public debate and silence critics. But most of all, Alito is one of the most uninteresting thinkers in the country. Here he is, in one of the most powerful and intellectually rigorous jobs on the planet — a philosopher king, presiding over the mightiest nation that has ever existed — and his only big idea is 'Republicans should win.'" BOOM. Mic drop, critical hit, straight to jail, do not collect $200.

A young Chicago mother shot to death after law enforcement failed to protect her
Time and time again, the police departments which suck up huge portions of city budgets prove themselves utterly incapable of doing their jobs and actually protecting their communities. 34-year-old Maria Roque did everything she was supposed to in trying to keep herself and her family safe from an abusive ex, filing one police report after another and never giving up. "It wasn't once, it wasn't twice, it was multiple times Roque went screaming for help with actual evidence," said a friend. What did the police do? They closed one case and suspended all the rest — meaning the cases were kept open but were not being investigated. In all the complaints — which included acts of arson, stalking, tire-slashing, and domestic abuse, there was no mention of police questioning her future killer even once. There was no contact, and there were no arrests. One day before the shooting that would take her life, instead of going to the police, Roque went straight to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. She was able to get an arrest warrant for her ex — and was shot dead while her children watched just hours later. "Police don't do much. They just say it is what it is," said her grieving twin brother, Andres Roque. "What do we have police for, then?"

Fontana pays nearly $900,000 for "psychological torture" inflicted by police to get false confession
In a truly shocking display of just how far cops are willing to go in order to get what they want, police inflicted horrifying psychological torture on Thomas Perez Jr. in order to get him to confess to killing his father, who was not dead, after Perez Jr. HIMSELF had called the cops to report him missing. The police interrogated Perez Jr. for 17 hours straight, telling him that his father was dead, that they had recovered his body and it now “wore a toe tag at the morgue" and that they had evidence that Perez killed his father. Perez Jr. maintained his innocence, but detectives told him that the human mind often tries to suppress troubling memories. The most gut-wrenchingly cruel thing they did was threaten to have his dog euthanized as a stray and even brought him into the room to say goodbye. Finally, after curling up with the dog on the floor, Perez broke down and confessed, saying he had stabbed his father multiple times with a pair of scissors during an altercation. He hadn't done any of those things, and his father was very much alive. Perez Jr. was so distraught that he tried to commit suicide in the interrogation room immediately after the cops left. “Mentally torturing a false confession out of Tom Perez, concealing from him that his father was alive and well, and confining him in the psych ward because they made him suicidal, in my 40 years of suing the police I have never seen that level of deliberate cruelty by the police,” said Jerry Steering, Perez’s attorney.

Ticketed at school as a teen, a young Black woman is suing an Illinois city for violating her civil rights
Amara Harris was accused of stealing a pair of AirPods as a high schooler, though she says she picked them up by accident. The school called in the cops, who gave her a $500 ticket for theft, which the city refused to drop despite having no evidence. After four long years of fighting, Harris was finally vindicated when a jury found her not liable. Now Harris is suing the city and the police, alleging that she was discriminated against because she is Black, and that the ticket issued to her “constituted racial discrimination, a denial of constitutional rights, intimidation, and retaliation.” Sadly, you won't be surprised to learn that Illinois has a for-profit system of police ticketing as a form of school discipline that disproportionately targets Black students. At Harris' school, Black students were FIVE times more likely to be ticketed than white kids. Funny how that (always) works.
