Biden's recent move to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III drug under the Controlled Substances Act is a great first step, but he's not going far enough. Reclassification won't decriminalize cannabis use or possession federally, keeps tens of thousands in jail for non-violent charges, and fails to address the social and racial justice issues caused by the criminalization of marijuana.

Rescheduling cannabis upholds the federal penalties for possession, even under state laws, and will not release Americans jailed for related offenses — or expunge their records.

On the campaign trail during the 2020 race, President Biden promised to decriminalize cannabis. His term is almost up, and we're still waiting. We're calling on President Biden fulfill his campaign promise and address the inequity perpetuated by marijuana charges.
