As Donald Trump considers potential Vice President running mates, Jim Jordan is desperately pandering to the hard right MAGA mob—going so far as to use his post in Congress to defend rioters convicted of attacking and hospitalizing police officers during the January 6th insurrection.

Jordan recently announced that he was looking into how Ronald McAbee was “treated” in a D.C. jail in 2022, implying that he was unjustly pepper sprayed by guards.

McAbee, who at the time of the January 6 riot was an off-duty Tennessee sheriff's deputy, was convicted in February 2024 for five felonies, a veritable laundry list of anti-police and anti-law and order offenses, including:

1) Assaulting, resisting, or impeding an officer,
2) Civil disorder,
3) Entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon,
4) Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon,
5) Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

That is the man that Jim Jordan is defending and supporting through his official actions in Congress as the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. A domestic terrorist and convicted felon who viciously attacked law enforcement officials, officers sworn to uphold the law and to maintain peace and order.

And the far-right MAGA hive quickly backed him up. Jordan retweeted a self-described “J6 conspiracy theorist” and “insurrection denier” who shared news of his frivolous inquiry:

For Jordan it's hardline fire and brimstone law and order for everyone EXCEPT for his beloved January 6th Insurrectionists 💕 who he thinks are above the law and should be treated with kid gloves.

There is no justification for Congress to intervene in cases like this. The only reason that Jordan is abusing his power to fight for a felon like Ronald McAbee is to impress Donald Trump.
