Biden’s proposal, based on the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, would close the "gun show loophole" that has allowed an untold number of firearms to be sold without any background checks. This lack of oversight has enabled the unchecked sale of weapons at gun shows, online, and out of private homes for far too long. Here’s what the new proposal entails:
- Licensing Requirements: Sellers who profit from gun sales must now be licensed and adherent to regulations.
- Universal Background Checks: Background checks are required for buyers at all sales points, now including firearms shows and online retailers.
- Public Safety Impact: This rule is set to affect over 20,000 unlicensed gun dealers and regulate tens of thousands of gun sales annually.
We all know that there is widespread popular support for stringent background checks, but conservative lobbying groups and misconceptions regarding gun rights have blocked them from being implemented. This proposal would respect safe, responsible gun ownership while cracking down on the illegal and unsafe practices that endanger our communities.
