Vote Mama Monthly Newsletter
🌸May 2024 Edition🌸

Here at Vote Mama, we celebrated Mother’s Day in a BIG WAY this month! We set a major goal of distributing $100,000 to our endorsed mamas by Mother’s Day this year. And with your help and generosity, we did it! Now, we’re already working toward getting the next $100K out the door to our pro-choice Democratic moms as soon as possible.

We’re also celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage (AANHPI) Month by honoring the contributions of AANHPI people, as well as raising awareness on the racial inequities that their community faces. Despite being the fastest growing racial group and being a powerful voting bloc, AANHPI people make up LESS THAN 1% of all elected officials in America. At Vote Mama, we’re proud to fight for AANHPI representation by standing with our trailblazing AANHPI candidates and alumnae, some of whom are highlighted below!

Check out what we’ve been up to this May!

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHTS

Patty Kim:
Patty Kim is running for the Pennsylvania State Senate against far-right GOP incumbent John DiSanto in what political pundits are calling one of the most competitive races to watch this year. For over 3 decades, Republicans have held control of the PA State Senate.

Patty, who is currently serving in the PA State House, made history as the first Asian-American to ever serve in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. She just won her crucial primary last month and is well on her way to helping Democrats flip the Pennsylvania State Senate BLUE in November!

Mai Xiong:
Mai Xiong has already proven that she has what it takes to win. She claimed victory in her special election last month — with 65% of the vote and helped Democrats regain their majority in the Michigan state legislature!

Mai is the first Hmong American AND first former refugee to ever serve in the Michigan House. The special election is over, but Mai has to gear up for another election battle in the fall to continue serving in the Michigan House. Unfortunately, Mai is facing redistricting challenges in Michigan — which means new district maps that include more Republican voters. But we are confident that Mai can beat the GOP in November!

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHTS

Priya Sundareshan:
Vote Mama alumna State Senator Priya Sundareshan (AZ) uses her elected position to fight for issues that matter. Priya has an educational background in environmental studies and has used her scientific, facts-based approach to be a leader on environmental policy in the Arizona State Senate. Arizona is a battleground state in this year’s election and abortion is a top ticket issue. Priya has been at the forefront of condemning GOP attempts to roll back our reproductive rights and she and her Democratic colleagues in the state legislature were instrumental in blocking the ridiculously outdated “zombie law” abortion ban from the 1860’s.

Tammy Duckworth:
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (IL) is no stranger to breaking barriers to representation in public office. She is the first Thai American woman ever elected to Congress, the first Asian American elected to the U.S. Senate from Illinois, AND the first woman to EVER give birth while serving in the U.S. Senate! Aside from making history and achieving all of these incredible “firsts,” Tammy is a true champion for our Democratic values. She’s a staunch defender of abortion access, an environmental climate warrior, and an advocate for fellow veterans.

VOTE MAMA IN THE MEDIA

Cosmopolitan Magazine:
We are fangirling over here! Vote Mama was featured both in print and online in a Cosmopolitan Magazine article entitled “How To Succeed In Office.” The piece highlights the inequities and barriers that women (and moms!) face while running for and serving in office and includes some powerful words from our Founder and CEO, Liuba Grechen Shirley. Check it out here on Cosmo's website!

NPR:
We had TONS of awesome press hits and coverage this May, but one of our favorites is the live discussion on NPR’s Here and Now radio program featuring Liuba and some incredible, trailblazing mamas (all of whom are Vote Mama PAC endorsed candidates!) who are running for re-election to the state legislature. Check out the full segment and accompanying articles on NPR’s website here to learn more about the barriers moms face and Vote Mama Foundation’s work to pass Campaign Funds for Childcare in all 50 states.
