Friend,
It’s been two years since 19 children and two teachers lost their lives to gun violence in Uvalde, Texas.
My heart goes out to the community still grieving and the families and friends whose lives will never be the same. While I can’t imagine the loss they’re carrying, I do know what it’s like to lose someone to gun violence. It’s a terrible pain that I've carried with me since I was 24, and one that I expect will stay with me forever.
It's knowing this type of loss that pushed me into public service. And now, being a mom is what continues that drive to advocate for gun violence prevention. It is terrifying to send your kid to school and not know if they'll come back home. But it's the staggering reality we live in today.
Right now, firearms are the number one cause of death of children in the United States. It’s the greatest moral failing of our time. Parents, kids, teachers, everyone deserves to feel safe in their own community. In order to do that, we have to take action to address gun violence.
While we’ve made progress in passing comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation, I know we still have a long way to go. I’m running to expand gun safety laws and end gun violence, so no child has to live in fear.
So much damage has already been done. But I hope my promise to continue this fight helps others know that together, we can change the future and make our communities safe for our loved ones.
Thank you,
Debbie
