Takeea was trying to get back on her feet when her belongings were stolen. Hassan really wanted a job and a home. Shawn had a job waiting if he could get a license. Clint was arrested for being homeless and not given his ID when he was released so he couldn’t get funds from his bank account. Edward wanted to stay in a shelter. Amanda wanted to check into rehab. Annie needed housing and cancer treatment.
When cities like Grants Pass decide to make life as hard as possible for their unhoused residents, when they turn off the water, lock the bathrooms, and reject applications for affordable housing, they aren’t batting off a minor inconvenience or clearing the parks of vermin. They are actively and purposefully harming people, real people, with hopes, dreams, pasts, and futures just like everyone else. These are real lives.
