Like any aspiring autocrat, Donald Trump can’t succeed alone. He depends on enablers and collaborators.

In the aftermath of January 6, a senior Republican congressman— who knew the danger Trump posed but was afraid to speak out —told me:

“Surviving is all that matters, Liz.”

It was a sad moment. Elected officials who believe their own political survival is more important than anything else threaten our republic, no matter what they tell themselves to defend their cowardice.

The fact is, in 2020, I won my primary with 73 percent of the vote. In 2022, I could have easily won again, but that would have meant spreading Donald Trump’s election lies and abandoning my oath to the Constitution – something I would never do.
