Rumours are swirling and Labor could be making a play to stay in government.

Dear John

Labor’s Fresh Food Tax would have saddled Australian families with even higher costs and wreaked chaos for our farmers, but thanks to your support, the tax is all but done for.

The Senate crossbench will block Labor’s disastrous fresh food tax, having seen reason from the Nationals campaign against it and the strength of support from Australians like you who backed us.

John, your support made all the difference to help Nationals MPs and Senators pushing to stop the tax in Parliament.

It was beyond sense for Labor to add on a Fresh Food Tax to the already out of control grocery bills Australians face due to their cost-of-living crisis. But the tax wouldn’t make sense in good years anyway, with a high administrative burden, unequally shared across the industries concerned, and designed to make our farmers pay for the costs and risks their international competitors create for the government.

The Coalition promised to repeal this madness and replace it with a scheme where the importer pays at the border. Now we won’t have to repeal it, saving Australians from another big new Labor tax in the meantime, and a future Coalition government can still bring in a scheme with some basic commonsense that doesn’t penalise Australian farmers and families.

The Nationals will always take your side and we welcome the news that the Senate has been persuaded to reject this attack on you.

Thank you again for your support.

Kind regards,

David Littleproud
Leader of the Nationals
