    Extended Paid Maternity Leave in Hong Kong

    In the May issue of Health Affairs, Ellie Andres of Duke-NUS and her team of coauthors explore the mental health implications of Hong Kong’s extension of statutory paid maternity leave from ten weeks to fourteen weeks.

     

    The researchers find that the maternity leave extension was associated with improved maternal mental health outcomes.

     

    Among other findings they estimate a 50 percent reduction in the odds of mothers reporting that their emotional well-being caused more than “some” interference with baby care during the first two months postpartum.

     

    Andres and coauthors also find reductions in mothers experiencing postnatal depressive symptoms.
