Albuquerque, New Mexico, is one of a number of cities embracing a radical
new approach to public safety—and it’s working. The city’s civilian-led
safety department sends trained professionals, not police, to respond to
issues like mental health crises, substance use, homelessness, and
   community disputes.
Albuquerque’s community-centered approach to public safety has led to
fewer people experiencing mental health crises and homelessness being shot
   by police.
