Dear John,

On Passover, we ask ourselves: “Why is this night different from all other nights?”

This age-old question has never felt more poignant, as our lives have been upended by the current crisis. These Seder nights will indeed be different, and this Passover unlike any other.

For a holiday that is, above all, about coming together to retell the Passover story, many of us are grappling with how to hold Seders without our loved ones by our side. Though painful, I’ve seen our community embrace this challenge, the same way the Jewish people have overcome trying times before—with resilience and determination.

We are finding new ways to honor our traditions. Some of us are planning to connect with our family and friends through online platforms like Zoom and FaceTime. We are taking extra care to reach out and support those who may be older, infirm, or alone. We are remembering that what matters most is the Mitzvah to protect life.

AJC would like to offer one more way to help you observe Passover this year. We have created a special Haggadah Supplement [link removed] —a prayer and a responsive reading, offering a call for collective strength amidst the pandemic. We hope you will make it part of your unique Seders. You can download it at AJC.org/passoverprayer2020 [link removed].

I also invite you to click on the video below to watch a Passover reflection by Rabbi David Rosen, AJC Director of International Interreligious Affairs, and a greeting from AJC staff across the United States and around the world. [link removed] As we cope with our new normal, one thing has never been clearer: Though we may not be seated in the same room, we have never been more united in our commitment to taking care of one another and making the world a safer place for all.

On behalf of AJC, thank you for being a part of our community. I wish you and yours a meaningful Passover. Despite the distance, may your bond as a family—and our bond as a people—be stronger than ever before.

Warmly,

Harriet P. Schleifer
AJC President
