Indigenous birthing parents are at greater risk of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
In the April Perinatal Mental Health And Well-Being issue, Amy Stiffarm of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies – Montana and coauthors provide an overview of her organization’s strategic approach to supporting the perinatal mental health needs of Tribal communities in Montana.
They document the formation of an online resource guide for Indigenous families, designed in collaboration with Tribal communities, and highlight key takeaways and policy recommendations.
Stiffarm and coauthors note the importance of acknowledging Indigenous cultural strengths and ways of knowing using a “Two-Eyed Seeing” in the development of perinatal mental health policy.
