This is a difficult time for many families here in the District and across the country. I know many of you are scared not only for your health and the health of your friends and family but about your jobs and about what life after this pandemic will look like. My thoughts are with everyone impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and all those who are anxious during this time of uncertainty. I again encourage you to reach out to your family and friends and stay connected, even as we remain physically separate.

It is also clear now more than ever why we need dedicated public servants in every level of government. As the DC government works to address the COVID-19 crisis, we need the best people in office to advocate for DC residents. Last week, I was proud to endorse Janeese Lewis George for Ward 4. Today, I’m going to tell you why and to ask you to join me in supporting her campaign.

I first met Janeese when she was a member of the Attorney General’s Juvenile Section. As an Assistant Attorney General, Janeese championed an innovative and forward-thinking approach to violence interruption and crime reduction. She demonstrated her keen judgment in using evidence-based approaches to ensure the best possible outcomes. In addition to her exemplary work on individual cases, Janeese also served as an ambassador for our “I Belong Here” truancy reduction program that has increased school attendance and promoted public safety. Since leaving the Office of the Attorney General, Janeese has shown that she is a leader who is unafraid to do what is right for all of DC’s residents, even in the face of entrenched corruption.

Not only is Janeese’s work exemplary, but she has unmatched integrity. Janeese knows that getting rid of corruption in politics is one of the most crucial issues facing our democracy. Janeese is not bought by big donors and refuses to accept donations from corporations, proving that she practices what she preaches. Janeese is relentlessly hardworking, incredibly smart, and unwaveringly independent. Janeese will bring her tremendous skills and insights to the role of Councilmember and DC will be richer for it.

I know at this time of crisis the last thing some of you may be thinking about is politics. And I completely understand that. However, we will need the best team in place in our city government to deal with the repercussions of this crisis. Janeese’s experience and character are sorely needed to effectively work with the rest of the city as we try to recover from this crisis. If you’re able, please donate today and help Janeese restore faith in our government.
