   John,
I was recently going through a box of old photos from the attic, and I
found one that I wanted to share with you. I think you’ll understand why.

That’s me being recognized by the National Council of Senior Citizens and
the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare in my
earlier days representing California in Congress.
As long as I’ve been a Democrat — from my teenage years when I listened to
scratchy vinyl recordings of RFK and JFK and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
to the present — I’ve seen the possibility and the promise of the
   Democratic Party.

Social Security and Medicare are two of the most successful anti-poverty
programs in American history — and Democratic presidents took on the
wealthy and corporate special interests to create both.
Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal guaranteed a retirement income for elderly
Americans even as he pulled our economy out of the Great Depression.
Lyndon Johnson’s Medicare program ensured every senior over the age of 65
could access care, and his Great Society program made our mid-century
economy the envy of the world.
Working together with the Biden administration, I’ve fought to not only
protect these programs but to expand them — taking on Big Pharma and
Trump’s far-right megadonors to do so. We’ve taken them on, and we’ve won.
Beginning on January 1 next year, no Medicare recipient will pay more than
$35 out-of-pocket for insulin or will pay more than $2,000 all-in for that
   year’s out-of-pocket prescription drug costs.
Our Inflation Reduction Act would have gone even further, allowing
Medicare to negotiate drug prices for ALL medicine, not just insulin — but
Republicans unanimously stood in our way.
Their nominee, Donald Trump, is openly suggesting cuts to Medicare and
Social Security yet again if he is elected president, just as he attempted
with every single year of his presidential budgets — and his opponents in
   the primary weren’t much better.
So is my opponent, Republican Steve Garvey.
This photo reminded me of everything that we’re fighting for when we fight
for Medicare and Social Security — a system where everyone pays their fair
share, where everyone can afford to see the doctor and fill their
prescriptions when they get sick, and where everyone can afford to retire
   with dignity.
