In April 2023, Rep. Tricia Cotham left the Democratic Party to give the Republicans a one-vote supermajority that allowed them to pass a cruel abortion ban. When Cotham ran as a Democrat, she pledged to her supporters that she would protect reproductive health care. She lied.

On April 5, 2023, a state representative who ran as a Democrat in a safe Democratic district switched parties — giving the NC GOP a veto-proof supermajority in our legislature.

Tricia Cotham ran on a platform of protecting reproductive health care. Instead of keeping her word, she betrayed her constituents and voted to enact the dangerous Republican abortion ban after her party switch. Every single Republican voted to override my veto while every single Democrat voted to sustain it. Without her party switch, this disastrous ban could have been stopped.
