In the April Perinatal Mental Health & Well-Being issue, Tova Walsh and Craig Garfield examine the literature on paternal perinatal mental health and explore ways to include fathers in policies aimed at improving parental mental health.

They find that fathers play a critical role as both partner and parent within the family structure.

Closer relationships between fathers and mothers are associated with lower levels of maternal stress, and fathers’ support can also help buffer the impact of maternal mental health challenges.

The researchers recommend engaging fathers in child and family services, including fathers in defining state-level maternal and child health priorities, and raising awareness about paternal perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, among other recommendations.

For more on the paper's findings, check out a video abstract featuring authors Tova Walsh and Craig Garfield.

Walsh also appeared on a recent episode of A Health Podyssey to further explore the paper with Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil.
