Get Out of Jail Free?

What to Know: Some judges in California (and elsewhere) are considering the mass release of jail and prison inmates to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The TPPF Take: Some prisoners can be released safely, but not all.

“Prudence dictates taking steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but prudence also prioritizes public safety—and the blanket release of entire classes of suspected or convicted offenders, regardless of risk, must not happen,” says Bernard Kerik, a signatory of TPPF’s Right on Crime project. “Individual risk assessments must be applied before releasing anyone.”

A Friend to Liberty

What to Know: Former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D., has lost his long battle with cancer.

The TPPF take: Sen. Coburn was a friend to TPPF and to liberty.

“Tom Coburn was the quintessential statesman of our time, placing country over self-interest—just as envisioned by our Founders," says TPPF’s Kevin Roberts. "I was privileged to know him, and count him as a friend; more important than even his policy achievements, Tom was a man of deep faith, providing a model grace, perseverance, and courage for each of us. What a terrible loss for his family and for his countrymen.”

Safer Cars, Still Cleaner

What to Know: Many in the media are misreporting the Trump administration’s new auto emissions rules as a “rollback” of standards.

The TPPF Take: The new standards—not a “rollback” by any means—will mean safer cars and smarter policies.

“The rule still requires a fuel economy increase of 1.5% per year over the next six years,” says TPPF’s Brent Bennett. “It is only a ‘rollback’ in the sense that it is less than the 5% annual increase required by the 2012 rule. On the flip side, the EPA accurately notes that this rule will increase the adoption of larger, safer vehicles. Real lives will be saved.”
