We know MAGA Republicans want to take us backward on abortion rights, and last week in Arizona they rewound the clock all the way to 1864! A new decision by the rightwing Arizona Supreme Court makes a Civil War-era total abortion ban the law of the land in that state. Nevermind that it was passed before Arizona was even a state, and decades before women had the right to vote.

This absurd decision is just the latest proof that for MAGA Republicans, no restriction on women’s reproductive freedom is too extreme. And their anti-choice, anti-women agenda isn’t just in Arizona. This is part of a nationwide strategy, John. MAGA Republicans, a.k.a. “Team Extreme,” are steadily chipping away at civil rights in every state where they control legislatures, governorships, or the courts. Their work accelerated during the Trump presidency and now – emboldened by the radical US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, and by harsh abortion restrictions that have become law in dozens of Republican-led states – they are pressing forward toward a national abortion ban.

It is imperative to our fundamental rights that we defend the Senate and pass legislation to override Dobbs and restore the protections in Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. I’ve worked with Ruben in Congress for a long time, and I’ve seen firsthand how hard he fights to better the lives of his constituents. On the Natural Resources Committee, we’ve defended vulnerable ecosystems, expanded renewable energy, stood up for tribal communities, and more.

Ruben has also voted to guarantee the legal right to travel across state lines to obtain an abortion, supported the right to access contraception, and sponsored legislation to protect women’s health care providers and sensitive medical data in the wake of the Dobbs decision.

In the Senate, Ruben will continue to champion a sustainable future and the right to control their own bodies and make their own healthcare decisions – but extremist politicians like Kari Lake and Donald Trump are hell-bent on sending our country further down a dark path. The only way we’ll be able to stop them is by winning at the ballot box.
