Even in our most trying times, there are always hopeful moments. This week, Captain Brett Crozier exemplified that hope.

The acting Secretary of the Navy defied the established military chain of command and relieved Captain Crozier from the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt. Why? Because of a letter he wrote demanding more help for his sailors as the Coronavirus spread through his ship was leaked to the press.

He put the lives of the men and women under his charge before himself, and his career, but he made the right decision. This is service before self. This is courage. This is what real leadership looks like.

Take note, as I and many other veterans who have commanded troops stand with Captain Crozier. Not only did he uphold senior officer responsibility, but he demonstrated what is lacking in this administration: He spoke truth to power, made a tough decision, and saved lives. For that, he lost his command and probably unraveled a promising career. But he rallied his troops and garnered the respect of millions of Americans tired of weak leadership in this uncertain time.

Watch closely the video of Captain Crozier as he leaves his ship and sailors, and you can understand what these men and women know and political appointees do not: The sacrifice of true leadership.

So, fair winds and a fallowing sea, Captain. Your nation and her sons and daughters under your command salute you.

Farewell,

Kim Olson Col, USAF, ret.
