Hi John,

It’s Senator Cory Booker, reaching out today during this Black Maternal Health Week to share an important update on Congresswoman Lauren Underwood and my effort to end the maternal health crisis in our country.

Shortly after being elected to Congress in 2018, Lauren, a registered nurse, co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus that she now co-chairs, more than 100 members strong.

We worked together to introduce a legislative package of thirteen bills in the House and Senate that together make up the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act.

Through diligent, bipartisan efforts to work with members on both sides of the aisle, we’ve seen the Protecting Moms Who Served Act signed into law.

But there remains a great deal of work to be done.

Despite global reductions in maternal mortality rates, preventable deaths related to pregnancy have risen in the United States for the last two decades.

Black mothers face far higher mortality rates, and for every Black mother lost, 70 more suffer “near misses” that leave long-term health ramifications.

Lauren and I know that we can do better. We must do better. That’s why we’re working together to pass the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act.
