When companies are careless with plastic, it ends up everywhere.
"Nurdles" are tiny pieces of plastic the size of lentils that are used to make almost all plastic products. They're being dumped into our waterways by the millions, contaminating our environment and adding to our growing plastic waste problem.[1]
The good news is that there's something we can do about it. The Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act would prohibit the dumping of plastic nurdles in our nation's waterways.

Plastic nurdles are produced from fossil fuels, shipped to factories, and then melted and poured into molds to make just about every plastic product, from plastic bags to plastic bottles.[2]
However, not all nurdles make it that far. During the manufacturing or transportation process, nurdles are often spilled, contaminating the environment. It's estimated that 10 trillion nurdles end up in our waterways every year.[3] They're also dumped or washed down the drain on purpose by plastics companies.
There are often no penalties for companies that dump this plastic into our waterways.[4] The Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act would change that.
The bill would require the Environmental Protection Agency to create regulations that prohibit companies from dumping plastic pellets or other pre-production plastic materials into our waterways.[5]

Our country is facing a plastic waste crisis, and nurdles play no small part. Of course, we're working to reduce the amount of plastic our country uses and discards day in and day out, but right now we have a big opportunity to make a difference on plastic pellet pollution.
