    In 2006, New Jersey implemented universal depression screening, requiring all birthing people to be screened before hospital discharge.

     

    In Health Affairs’ April Perinatal Mental Health & Well-Being issue, Slawa Rokicki of Rutgers University examines the associations between depressive symptom severity and infant emergency department (ED) use during the first year of life among infants born in New Jersey between 2016–18

     

    She finds that perinatal depressive symptoms were associated with increased overall and nonemergent infant ED use.
