John -- Join us in meeting this moment by being one of 500 people to pledge to #ShareMyCheck today!
A lot of us who get this stimulus check won’t need it for economic survival. Pledging to redistribute this check to poor and working-class led social justice communities and organizations is one way we can support economic and racial justice right now.
While we are all impacted by this pandemic, we know that the harm will not be distributed equally nor is it a singular, isolated crisis. Millions of people, especially poor and working-class people and communities of color, have lost their jobs in a matter of weeks and many are forced to work at great personal risk without appropriate protections, compensation, or healthcare -- these dangerous and unjust working and healthcare conditions are systemic to racial capitalism.
This stimulus check, which is intended for individuals who have an annual income of $99,000 or less (this is higher for families or people who file jointly), while helpful for many people, will still not be enough to meet the needs of many. Millions of others will not be receiving checks at all, including those who are undocumented, incarcerated, or who do not have social security numbers, bank accounts, or home addresses.
As young people with access to wealth and class privilege, we commit to practicing interdependence and taking collective action in moments like this in solidarity with those historically most impacted by economic and health crises.
Pledge to #sharemycheck if any of the following apply:
- Your annual income is less than $99,000 a year (so will get a stimulus check!) but you have access to wealth or class privilege
- Your income is too high to receive a check, but still want to commit to move at least $1200
- You are not struggling to meet your needs right now: because you have enough income, savings, or wealth
- You have a salaried job that is continuing, you did not lose employment or are not furloughed.
- You aren’t employed full-time or dependent on employment for access to money and healthcare
- You’re in a position to help others in financial need or have done so already during this time! ***Check out RG’s interpersonal cross-class giving guide here.
Also, #webinaralert: pledge to #ShareMyCheck then register for ***upcoming free, public webinar "COVID-19 and Capitalism" on April 10th!***
On Friday April 10th join us for a panel-style conversation with Karissa Lewis from the Movement for Black lives, Tracey Corder from the Center for Popular Democracy, and healing justice activist Susan Raffo as they all share lessons being learned from within this moment, what is being laid bare about global racial capitalism, what is being made possible, and what is being asked of young people with wealth and class privilege. Register for the webinar on Friday 4/10 from 3:00-4:30 ET/ 12:00-1:30 PT here.
In this time of the federal government spending $1.5 trillion dollars to bailout Wall Street and massive corporations lining up for their own bailouts, we are in a fight between opportunistic disaster capitalism and a transformative progressive vision of universal health care, canceling student loan debt, universal housing, free utilities, universal basic income, and decarceration. We know which side we’re on and we’re ready to meet this moment.
