This week Governor Josh Green led the opening of a new temporary school in Pulelehua, Maui for students displaced by the Lahaina wildfires.

“It is a small miracle that in just 95 days a school has been created,” Governor Green said. "We need some small miracles here after the fire that we suffered. This is the place where most kids are going to find their normal moments, their stable moments.”

Governor Green spoke to about 100 educators and dignitaries gathered to launch the temporary campus replacing King Kamehameha III Elementary School.

On Monday, teachers and staff began moving first into the 30 air-conditioned, fully furnished modular classrooms at the new site about 7 miles north of the original campus.

The timeline details progress and coordination among state and Maui County officials, community stakeholders, and federal partners, including FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Josh commended the coordinated efforts and successes in the recovery, including constructing housing, reopening school facilities, and increasing federal investment.

"Despite the adversity and devastation its people have faced, Maui’s resilience has been remarkable," Governor Green said. “Just as its communities have been unwavering in their tenacity, our commitment to supporting Maui remains firm. We will continue to provide immediate assistance as well as laying the groundwork for long-term recovery.”

The partners in the recovery effort have already moved more than 60% of families displaced by the fires into long-term housing.

"We are not just constructing buildings; we are restoring livelihoods and communities," Josh said. “We will make sure that we use every resource we have effectively, and every family receives the help they need to rebuild.”

We will continue to keep you updated on Governor Green’s efforts on the Maui recovery and other important issues.

Mahalo,

Team Green
