Corpus Christi, Texas (March 27, 2024) -Nueces County will be gifted a 203-pound bronze plaque containing Col. William Barret Travis' "Victory or Death" letter at the Nueces County Courthouse on Thursday, March 28 at 9:00 a.m., followed by a public screening of The Alamo at Cole Park Amphitheater on Friday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m.
As part of a statewide initiative, the Nueces County Alamo Letter Plaque will be presented to Nueces County Judge Connie Scott on Thursday at the Courthouse by Alamo Letter Society Founders Bill McNutt as well as Nueces County chapter representative, Michael Chester, President of Corpus Christi Stamp Works. This ceremony, featuring a live performance of the national anthem by Clarissa Serna, music by the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi, and a cameo by actor/stuntman Thomas "Tommy" Worrell from the 1960 movie The Alamo, will serve as the third official dedication in Texas, following Ellis and Rockwall counties.
"We are proud Texans here in Nueces County, and this plaque will be a permanent reminder to honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom," says Nueces County Judge Connie Scott. "We are excited to be one of the first counties to display the letter at our Courthouse, and we look forward to a community-wide movie night to 'remember the Alamo."'
The community is encouraged to continue the reflection of Texas' fight for freedom at a free movie night screening of John Wayne's The Alamo at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29 at Cole Park Amphitheater. Families are invited to bring chairs and blankets to watch the movie, rated TV-PG. A food truck will be on-site. Alcohol is prohibited.
Also, as part of the celebration of this permanent installation, the Alamo Letter Society hosted an essay contest for seventh graders throughout the county. The winner, Tyonna Mcclary from West Oso Junior High School, will read her winning essay at Thursday's plaque dedication.
