Dear john,

I just held my first Telephone Town Hall of the year. If you missed it, you can catch the replay here.

Video

During the call, one of the many topics constituents raised questions about was student debt relief. Trust me when I say I understand how important this is, I received my Public Service Loan Forgiveness last year. Student debt relief transforms lives. We must explore all pathways to ease the burden for borrowers so they can continue pursuing opportunity and share in the promise of America.

With my 2024 State of the Union guest, Mr. Ronald Washington, an Atlanta Public Schools teacher who received $160,000 in student debt relief.

If you missed the telephone town hall, you have another opportunity to get your questions answered. The first Congress in Your Community of 2024 is coming up on Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.. We’ll be sharing location details soon, so be on the lookout. If you need help with a federal agency, my district team will be on site to assist! We hope to see you there.

You don’t have to wait until March 28th to get the help you need. As always, if my office can ever be of assistance, give us a call at 404-659-0116 to reach my team in the District, or 202-225-3801 to reach my team in Washington, DC.

Yours for the People,

Rep. Nikema Williams signature

Reducing Residential Noise Pollution

One thing that I’ve heard most about from constituents and local elected officials alike is the disruption that comes from interstate traffic. Our district is known for its traffic and it is more than just a nuisance on the roads. That’s why I reintroduced the Negating Neighborhood Noise Act, to allow federal Highway Trust Fund dollars to be used for communities to construct noise barriers. Currently, federal funds cannot be used for this purpose. The legislation allows communities to create noise barriers that fulfill other needs like broadband infrastructure or solar panels.

This is exactly how infrastructure investments should be: tailored to the needs of communities. You can find the text of the Negating Neighborhood Noise Act here.

Now Open: The John R. Lewis Post Office!

I had the privilege of celebrating Atlanta’s main post office being renamed as the John R. Lewis Post Office with members of Congressman Lewis’ family. I led the legislation to rename the post office after my friend, mentor, and predecessor. Hopefully everyone who uses the John R. Lewis Post Office is inspired to get into some good trouble! Congressman Lewis used that post office often and the celebration took place just after what would have been his 84th birthday.

We Love Our First Responders!

Team Nikema brought Valentine’s greetings to first responders throughout the Fighting Fifth! These tokens of appreciation were the least we could do to say thank you for always being the first ones on the line in our time of need. Watch the reel we made here.

YOUTHOcracy Summit at Clark Atlanta University

Students voices matter now more than ever. At the YOUTHOcracy summit at Clark Atlanta University, I spoke to HBCU students from across the country, reminding them that democracy is an act and it is up to us to keep moving our country forward. It was uplifting to spend so much time with the next generation of HBCU world changers!

Two New Leaders in College Park

Congratulations to College Park’s two newest Councilwomen, Jamelle McKenzie and Tracie Arnold for being sworn into office, and congratulations to Mayor Bianca Motley Broom for being sworn in for another term as mayor! I look forward to serving the people of College Park and Georgia’s Fifth District with you!

Cleo, from Atlanta

Mr. Cleo contacted me because for a year he was “getting the run around” from the Department of Education after submitting a Public Service Loan Forgiveness application. He was looking to receive $300,000 in student loan debt forgiveness. While attempting to obtain an answer from DOE and MOHELA, Mr. Cleo’s father passed away, too. I contacted the DOE and was able to have his application processed with relief arriving.

“Thank you to Congresswoman Williams! This is definitely life changing for me and my family. Now, I can support my mom and enrich children’s education activities which is very important to my wife and I. Student loan debt should not be running people’s lives financially–you’re unable to buy a home or pursue financial success because of larges student loan debt. Anyone who needs help from their elected officials should call them. Having someone like Congresswoman Williams who represents us and wants to help is who we need in this political atmosphere.
