Rep. Troy E. Nehls Sends Letter to DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Joins Fox and Friends Watch the full interview HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls in The Hill: Venezuela won't take its criminals back. So why does Biden keep taking them? Following the tragic death of Georgia student Laken Riley at the hands of an illegal Venezuelan, I authored an op-ed for The Hill with Greg Sindelar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF), regarding Venezuela's refusal to take back their criminals who are illegally crossing our southern border. Regarding illegal immigration, I hear people say all the time, “Send them back to where they came from,” or “Don’t let them in to begin with.” However, due to the Biden Administration’s poor choices, these solutions are not available. Very simply, Venezuela doesn’t want its criminals back, and Joe Biden has proven perfectly content with bowing down to Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro in this regard. For years, the U.S. did not regularly conduct repatriation flights to Venezuela due to strained relations and concerns about human rights abuses by the Venezuelan regime. Then, in October 2023, a deal was reached for Venezuela to begin accepting repatriation flights from the U.S. After the initial deal was struck, the U.S. sent home about 1,800 Venezuelans on 15 flights over four months — a mere fraction of the half-million Venezuelans who have been encountered at the southern border since Joe Biden took office. The repatriation flights were seen as a critical warning to Venezuelans that if they crossed the U.S. border illegally, they would face deportation. Indeed, there was a dramatic decrease in Venezuelans encountered at the border after the first repatriation flights took place. But in February 2024, the Maduro regime halted the repatriation flights in retaliation for Joe Biden’s imposition of sanctions against Venezuela’s gold industry and a new threat to reimpose sanctions against its oil industry. Now, the United States has little way to send these criminal Venezuelans back as the Biden Administration continues to invite more into our country. Our op-ed suggests that Joe Biden initiate a moratorium on all Venezuelan migration until the Maduro regime agrees to cooperate with deportation requests. If he fails to do this, Laken Riley’s family will not be grieving alone. Read the full op-ed HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls and Rep. Dan Crenshaw Send Letter to DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg Regarding United Airlines Major Safety Incidents Rep. Troy E. Nehls and Rep. Dan Crenshaw Send Letter to... WASHINGTON, D.C. -Today, Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) and Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-02) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg regarding recent major safety incidents at United Airlines. Read more nehls.house.gov This week, I sent a letter, along with Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-02), to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg regarding recent major safety incidents at United Airlines. In the letter, we call on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement appropriate accountability measures to ensure these incidents do not continue and the flying public’s safety is maintained. We also urge the FAA to promptly disclose the results of its investigation into United Airlines regarding several major safety incidents to our offices and the public at large. Like all airlines, United operates a variety of aircraft, all requiring frequent maintenance to ensure a safe operation. Over the past few weeks alone, United Airlines has been plagued by at least six safety incidents. These include, but aren’t limited to, an engine malfunction on a United aircraft, a faulty landing gear that led to a tire falling out of the sky off a United aircraft, and an unsafe landing when a United aircraft skidded off a runway and tipped over at Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), where many of our constituents work and traverse regularly. While United’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Scott Kirby recently released a public statement in the aftermath of these safety incidents in an attempt to reassure customers, the folks of TX-22 rightfully are demanding answers and accountability.
