Health Outcomes And Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, funded through a range of sources including the Older Americans Act of 1965, provides home-delivered meals to more than 1 million older Americans annually.

In the March issue of Health Affairs, Sarah Walsh of Eastern Michigan University and coauthors explore associations between Meals on Wheels use and likelihood of continued community residence and risk for hospitalization for Medicare beneficies ages sixty-five and older.

They found that compared with nonusers, Meals on Wheels users were older, more likely to be Black, enrolled in Medicaid, and in poorer health.

They also conclude that Meals on Wheels users and nonusers are similarly likely to age in place, and Meals on Wheels use was marginally associated with increased likelihood of hospitalization, with stronger associations among frail older adults.

Last year, we released the first season of our health equity podcast, Research and Justice For All.

Sponsored by CVS Health, the series provided perspectives on how to dismantle unjust systems and structures that have long impacted health outcomes in historically marginalized populations.

If you haven’t listened yet, here’s a good chance to get caught up on the first season, “Private Sector Solutions for Health Equity.”

Hosted by CVS Health’s Sree Chaguturu and Joneigh Khaldun, the inaugural season explored how to challenge injustices in health care through research, evidence, community-building, and other innovative solutions.

Check out the entire first season below and keep an eye out for news on a second season in the very near future!
