Legislative Update

Friends and Neighbors,

This week the House Republican Caucus held a Public Safety Press Conference to roll out our package of seven bills to support our law enforcement and first responders. These are the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep us all safe. Democrats in Saint Paul continue to block our efforts to fund our police force and take care of the dedicated officers who serve our communities. Our leads in the public safety arena rolled out a collection of seven bills and you can watch the complete press conference here: Facebook Watch [ [link removed] ]

Attacks on religious freedom continue to be an important issue this week at the Capitol. In the dark of night Monday evening the Senate Judiciary Committee moved their bill forward without language to reinstate the religious exemption in the Minnesota Human Rights Act. This rejection is a clear attack on religious freedom, a founding principle of our country and constitution, protected by both the Minnesota and U.S. Constitutions. The views and actions of religious organizations should be determined by the organizations themselves, not by the state legislature. We will continue to fight for religious freedom and protections under the 1st Amendment. However, we need your assistance. We urge you to make your voices heard to the Majority Leadership in the legislature. It is crucial that they understand that religious institutions should have the autonomy to make decisions based on their own values.

Another issue that has been top of mind is the recent announcement that both Uber and Lyft will be ending service in Minneapolis and likely the entire state after their city council passed an ordinance on drivers. This has quickly blown up in the Minneapolis City Council?s face and without action by the legislature will result in these services being discontinued in the state. The heavy hand of government again is causing more problems than it solves.
