REAL ESTATE RECAP Greenlight for New Goodwill and AHC Development On Saturday, February 24, the Arlington County Board unanimously approved the redevelopment of Goodwill of Greater Washington’s flagship store in Arlington, VA. The plan will provide critically needed, service-enriched, affordable housing, a new, world-class retail store, an improved donation process, and childcare on the existing store’s site at 10 S. Glebe Road. “This innovative collaboration with Goodwill of Greater Washington continues AHC’s work partnering with mission-focused organizations to develop housing with holistic services,” said Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO. “We also appreciate the deep community support for this important development.” Read Details This first-of-its-kind partnership is making headlines! Reporter/anchor Mike Murillo covered the project for WTOP News. Online D.C. real estate publication UrbanTurf featured the project.   Randolph Road Receives Secured Funding AHC’s upcoming Silver Spring community, Randolph Road, is receiving $1.175 million to help fund the childcare and community center. Randolph Road is one of 13 community projects in Maryland’s Eighth District that Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) secured federal funding for in the appropriations bill that passed Congress and President Biden signed into law on March 9, 2024. The community will add 195 deeply affordable homes with onsite Resident Services and childcare. Randolph Road co-locates rental and homeownership housing options. We’re working hard with Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, Harkins Builders, and Bonstra l Haresign Architects to bring this community to its first residents in 2025. Our property management partner for the community is Habitat America. Industry Leadership in Action At the 2024 Fairfax County Housing Symposium, Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, served on a panel of experts to discuss the difficulties and benefits of the development, preservation, and adaptive reuse of affordable housing. We’re proud to have been a part of such an important event with elected leaders, industry and policy experts, and housing advocates working to advance the role of affordable housing in the community. AHC at Maryland Housing Day Last month, the Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition held its virtual 2024 Housing Day followed by in-person legislative meetings in Annapolis. We loved learning about important Maryland legislative initiatives that will support affordable housing. Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, Jennifer Endo, AHC Vice President of Community Relations/Chief of Staff, and Mary Claire Davis, AHC Vice President of Real Estate Development, visited Maryland's capital to meet with legislators and discuss the importance of prioritizing equitable, accessible, and affordable housing.   NEWS NUGGETS Celebrating Women's History Month at AHC It’s Women’s History Month! This year’s theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.” At AHC, we believe diverse, integrated communities are resilient communities. To celebrate International Women’s Day, kids in the Afterschool program at one of our communities read “Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World” by Vashti Harrison. Then the students made tissue paper flowers and attached inspiring quotes to give to an important woman in their world.   Reading Starts with One Word March is National Reading Month. Thanks to One Word Reading Initiative, kids in our Afterschool programs have gotten to pick out and take home brand new books for their at-home collections. Aliyah, a student from The Potomac School, created the initiative to provide free books to kids from families living on lower incomes. She has distributed more than 150 books to our young residents so far!   Building Literacy as a Family At AHC, we build literacy with our young residents all year long. Once a month, during the Afterschool program, one of our communities holds a “Read with Me” family literacy night. Parents join the program to read with their children, enhancing literacy skills and parent engagement. Animals and Education AHC’s Leaders in Training (LIT) program visited the Animal Welfare League of Arlington for career exploration, clicker training with the cats, dog treat decorating, and trivia. They also got to spend some time with the animals. Thank you, AWLA, for such an unforgettable experience for our young residents! Watch Video   Women's Empowerment Starts Again A new cohort of our Women’s Empowerment program started at Barclay Greenmount, an AHC community in Baltimore. The program provides financial and digital literacy training, as well as community-building and support to its participants. During last week’s meeting, the group heard from Kisha Webster, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Greenmount West Community Center, about creating a life of ease, peace, and joy.
