John,
According to Gallup, 46% of Americans now identify as Independents. It’s no surprise given how partisan and divisive party politics has become.
Open Primaries is committed to a simple premise: no American should be forced to join a political party in order to vote.
Last month, OP President John Opdycke sat down with the former Mayor of Phoenix Paul Johnson to discuss how independents are pushing the envelope in Arizona with regards to letting “All Voters Vote.”
Big picture: the Arizona coalition looked at many different reform models and concluded that any change to elections to make them better, more accountable and less divisive had to begin with making primaries accessible to ALL voters.
If Make Elections Fair Arizona succeeds, state, federal, AND presidential primaries will be open to ALL voters starting in 2025.
This is a bold approach and more importantly they listened and responded to what voters wanted. If they’re able to successfully change Arizona’s system, it will embolden leaders, reformers and voters across the country to follow AZ’s lead.
We highly encourage you to check out IVN’s coverage of the event or watch the full conversation here:
Thank you,
The Open Primaries Team
