Click here Dear John, You may have seen my email of last week, introducing our work with communities in Somaliland to support families' nutrition as climate change makes it harder for people to produce and secure food. While we are supporting over 40 health facilities across the country to assess and treat people for malnutrition, there are still many who find it difficult to travel to those facilities. This is why our mobile outreach teams travel to rural communities, so that people with limited mobility and finances can still access vital healthcare. Halima and her nephew Ali were supported by our mobile outreach team Halima and Ali's StoryHalima and her one-year-old nephew Ali live in the village of Xamas, more than 40 kilometres from the regional capital Berbera. When one of our mobile outreach teams visited Xamas during an ongoing drought, Halima brought Ali, who was suffering from moderate malnutrition, to our mobile nutrition and health clinic for treatment.
Halima has been struggling to make a living selling tea since losing her livestock to the drought. Her sister, Ali’s mother, died due to complications during childbirth at the height of the drought, one of five women to die giving birth in the village over the course of a year. Since then, Halima has taken care of her nephew. Children are assessed for malnutrition at the clinics we support Our outreach team weighed and measured the youngster to assess the extent of his malnourishment before providing Halima with high protein nutrition supplements to help Ali regain his strength.
The mobile outreach team continued to check up on Ali over the next four months, ensuring he continued to receive nutrition supplements until he made a complete recovery. We have been working in Somaliland since 1994, building strong partnerships with public agencies, other organisations and local activists. Our team is drawn from the communities we work with and have a good understanding of the issues that people face. We take a long-term approach, collaborating with health workers, community leaders and government officials to address the issues impacting on people's health and wellbeing. Crucially, we also work with activists globally to tackle the root causes of issues like climate change that drive so much insecurity in countries like Somaliland. Committed supporters enable us to engage with key issues in countries like Somaliland and globally. Please consider making a regular donation and joining the Health Poverty Action Community. Whatever you give will help to address the immediate concerns of communities globally and the longer-term issues we face together. In solidarity, Siaffa Bunduka, Supporter Engagement Manager P.S.
