9.3 million more people would have voted.

Fellow activist,

In a recent study released by the Brennan Center for Justice, they found that, since the Supreme Court overturned key parts of the federal Voting Rights Act, the gap in turnout rates between white and nonwhite voters “grew almost twice as quickly in formerly covered jurisdictions as in other parts of the country with similar demographic and socioeconomic profiles.”

The Voting Rights Act protected voters against racial discrimination. For example, counties with a history of racial discrimination were required to obtain permission from the Justice Department before changing voting laws. But the Supreme Court decided that discrimination at the polls “no longer existed,” thus, protections were unnecessary. 🙄

As a result, state legislatures across the country quickly passed extreme barriers to voting with the intention of silencing Black and brown voters. This included new voter ID laws, purging hundreds of thousands of names from voter rolls, eliminating drop boxes, and more.

According to the New York Times, the study found that if nonwhite voters had participated at the same rate as white voters during the 2020 election, 9.3 million more people would have voted. And in the 2022 midterms, that total would have been 13.9 million ballots.

It’s clear: discrimination at the polls is having a crushing impact on our democracy.

NPP is fighting to ensure that all Pennsylvanianians eligible to vote, especially Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, immigrant communities, and the youth (17-35-year-olds), have equitable access to the ballot box and are able to make their voices heard in every election, twice a year.
