Latest News from Nottingham City Council - Leader email banner

?It?s been a privilege but I?m standing down as Leader of the council?
I announced today (Tuesday) that I will not be seeking re-election as the Leader of Nottingham City Council in May.
Each year, the majority councillors have the chance to choose who they want to lead the authority and it has been a privilege to hold that role for the past five years.
I will continue as a ward councillor for Dales but won?t be putting myself forward when colleagues choose who they would like to lead the authority from May onwards.
The past five years have certainly been challenging. They have, of course, included the Covid-19 Pandemic, reduced council funding, the collapse of ?intu?, the closure of Robin Hood Energy and a government-appointed Improvement Board at the council.
However, these challenges have been matched by successes such as the opening of the new Nottingham Central Library, plans for a renewed Broad Marsh development including a new city centre park, several hundred new council houses and a successfully-reopened Nottingham Castle.
I?ve always tried to do my best to provide the leadership that the people of Nottingham deserve. I?m grateful for the support and understanding I have received in my time as Leader, but after five years in the role, I have made the decision to step aside to allow fresh leadership to continue our council?s journey of improvement.

New play area opens as part of the Broad Marsh regeneration plans
Collin Street play area
I was joined by pupils from Welbeck Primary School to help open a play space along Collin Street outside the new Central Library.
This has been funded by money we bid for from the Government?s Transforming Cities Fund and features specially-designed swings, a play trail with timber stepping blocks, balancing walkways, a seesaw and green planting.
As well as the new play space, Collin Street is now fully open for people to walk through, with a traffic-free route connecting the Green Heart where construction work has started.
Collin Street is the latest piece of the wider Broad Marsh public realm redevelopment, which already includes the new green public space on Sussex Street next to Nottingham College, with a mini amphitheatre, a skateable space and a multi-use games area. Plus, the area has already seen the development of a new Central Library, car park and bus station.
I?m pleased we have finished work on the play area outside of the new Central Library, creating a child-friendly destination that families will want to come and spend time in.

Expanded travel offer for young people
Travel offer
Robin Hood 19-21 prices are now available to buy as Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) cards at travel centres, via the Robin Hood Ticketing App and at tram stop machines, following on from the introduction of the season card product last autumn.
We all know how vital public transport is to young people?s independence and so this scheme aims to support them by improving access to travel for work, leisure and study.
Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council are working in partnership to deliver Nottinghamshire U22, a new ticketing price point on buses and trams across the county offering student prices to all under 22-year-olds.
Funding was secured by a bid from both councils to the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) ? a grant from Central Government to improve bus services across the city region.
