Dear  john ,

I hope that you and your family are well. The National Park Service recently  announced that the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., will bloom in mid March, with “peak bloom” starting between March 23-26th and lasting for 10  days. As the Cherry Blossom festival marks the annual kick-off to spring in D.C., please remember that my office is always available to assist with booking tours and tickets. It’s always a pleasure to welcome you to our nation’s capital!

Honoring Laken Riley

Two weeks ago, Laken Riley's life came to an abrupt, tragic, and completely  avoidable end when she was murdered by a criminal illegal alien. If not for Biden and Mayorkas's repeated, flagrant violations of our immigration laws, she would  be alive today.

No law can bring Laken back or take away the pain suffered by her family and the countless victims of illegal alien crime. We owe it to them to ensure that the Biden administration and other progressive politicians cannot shield these criminal illegal aliens who commit theft offenses, and other serious  criminal acts, through their callous indifference.

After a successful markup at the Judiciary Committee, my SUE Act became a critical component of the Laken Riley Act, ensuring that states have standing to sue open-border Executive Branch officials who refuse to enforce our  nation’s immigration laws. The Laken Riley Act will also require the detention of  illegal aliens who commit theft.

Had Laken's murderer been detained by ICE after committing a shoplifting  offense, she would still be alive, today. No bill can bring Laken back, but we can do our best to honor her memory and prevent this horror from happening again.  You can watch my full speech supporting this legislation and honoring Laken’s memory below.

Combatting Biden’s Lawless Chaos

Drugs, chaos, and crime stream unabated every day across our Southern border.  The tragedies are all too real, and the consequences are dire.

Americans don’t feel safe on their streets or in their neighborhoods-the left’s  lawless policies reward criminals and hurt law-abiding citizens.

This week, I introduced two important bills to address this:

The Immigration Detainer Enforcement Act will combat sanctuary cities and rogue sheriffs.

The Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act will increase data collection to help combat the skyrocketing number of attacks against law enforcement.

President Biden and the leftists in his party are set on pursuing an open borders, soft-on-crime agenda, and Americans are bearing the brunt of their lawlessness.  The chaos and disorder we’re seeing across the nation is entirely preventable, and I’m determined to do all I can in Congress to combat Biden’s disastrous policies.

The State of the Union? Weak and in Decline.

President Biden delivered his annual State of the Union address to Congress and the nation on Thursday evening. It was an embarrassment for our nation.

TWEET: This is not a State of the Union. This is an angry screed vilifying half the country.

The President spent more time talking about Snickers bars, the war in Ukraine, and comparing himself to FDR fighting Hitler than even giving lip service to the  border crisis he created. He refused to take responsibility for his own policies that have led to the deaths of Laken Riley and countless Americans.

He decried “book bans," not mentioning that his own administration  pressured Amazon to censor books they don't like, and threatened SCOTUS justices for making decisions he doesn’t like. Truly a Divider-In-Chief.

TWEET: The Biden admin censored books they didn’t agree with

It’s a sad day indeed for our country when the state of the union is this weak.

America’s adversaries are laughing at us.

The Censorship Accountability Act

We've recently had some great news in the ongoing fight against censorship from Big Tech working in tandem with Big Government.

TWEET: The Censorship Accountability Act just PASSED out of committee

After the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government and the House Judiciary Committee pursued a thorough investigation into the Deep State’s efforts to censor Americans, my colleagues on the committee and I marked up and passed my major bill to hold federal bureaucrats who censor Americans accountable, and deter them from violating the First Amendment  going forward.

The Censorship Accountability Act will give the American people the tools to fight  back against a bureaucracy that more closely represents George Orwell’s 1984 by the day. The bill ensures that government agents who censor what Americans say  online, whether directly or laundered through social media companies, can be sued and held accountable in a court of law.

I spoke with the Media Research Center on the importance of this legislation and  look forward to the bill receiving a vote on the House floor. Our critical  investigations of the Censorship Industrial Complex continue, and I will do  everything in my power to hold them accountable and protect your constitutional rights.

Hunter on the Hill

Hunter Biden finally appeared recently on Capitol Hill for a deposition with our Oversight and Judiciary Committees.

I attended the deposition and can tell you firsthand that Hunter was defiant and continued to deny that his father worked with him on business matters, despite clear evidence to the contrary

You can read the full transcript here. We continue to doggedly pursue our investigation into Joe Biden's role in the Biden family corruption scandal.

The Week in Weaponized Government

You’ve likely seen reports of the Orwellian social credit system implemented by  the Chinese Communist Party. Your every move tracked by the government, your purchases and other decisions under the government’s control - we can never allow such tyranny to take root in America. That’s why I’m glad to be supporting a bill that would prevent just that.

TWEET: CBDCs are a direct threat to every freedom we hold dear.

We need to plant a flag now and stop all those who would put this nation on a path toward a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), a tool to make all transactions trackable, controlled by the government, and subject to the whims of whoever is in charge. I will staunchly oppose any such effort and fight to preserve  your freedoms.

I also worked with my colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee to launch an  inquiry into the ATF’s most recent efforts to prevent the lawful sale of firearms.  The Second Amendment, and your rights enshrined by that amendment, are clear  - and the fight to preserve and protect these freedoms is constant.

Cracking Down on the CCP

This past week, I joined my colleagues Earl Blumenauer and Neal Dunn, along with a large group of stakeholders across the nation, to launch the Coalition to Close the De Minimis Loophole.

The CCP uses every opportunity possible to take advantage of America - and with the de minimis trade loophole, they are able to flood America with fentanyl and other illicit drugs, products made with slave labor, and other counterfeit and toxic products through low-cost package shipments.

In my role as Chairman of the Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Subcommittee of the House Committee on Homeland Security Committee, I have been leading efforts to expose this major problem and improve enforcement of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. We’ve made great headway so far, successfully pressuring DHS to beef up the agency’s work enforcing this Act due to the tremendous harms the CCP is doing to our textile industry.

READ: "This is an economic, strategic, and moral issue"

I've heard firsthand from textile manufacturers in North Carolina who are feeling the pain from these unfair trade practices. These CCP practices harm American businesses and take thousands of American lives, and we need to give our law enforcement the resources and data they need to combat this scourge.

Art Competition

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent nationwide and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and each Congressman selects a winner. Winners are recognized both in our district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Artwork submissions are due to one of our district offices by April 12, 2024.
