Rep. Troy E. Nehls Responds to Biden's State of the Union Address Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Responds to President Biden's State of the Union Address President Joe Biden's State of the Union address goes to show how out of touch he really is with reality. Since President Biden has been in office, inflation is up 17.9%, over 8.7 million illegal aliens have crossed the border, crime is running rampant, we have a two-tiered justice system, and our foreign adversaries are emboldened. Despite what he says, he has the full authority to secure our borders—he just refuses to use it. American families are struggling to put food on the table, and our country is no longer respected with him in the White House. President Biden's address had very little substance and didn't address the real problems facing our country and the American people. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Speaks at House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Hearing on DOT Discretionary Grants As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I attended a hearing titled "Department of Transportation Discretionary Grants: Stakeholder Perspectives." At this hearing, committee members heard firsthand from stakeholders about their experiences with the Department of Transportation (DOT) 's discretionary grant programs. During the hearing, I had the opportunity to question the President of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) about rail crossings. Ninety-five percent of all railway fatalities occur at grade crossings and are usually due to human error. I also questioned the Secretary of the Florida DOT regarding the distribution of discretionary grants to different states. The Secretary confirmed that the amount Texas receives is inconsistent with the metrics, whether it is rail miles, vehicle miles, or population. The safest rail-crossing is the one that doesn't exist, and Texas has a disproportionate volume of these crossings, but the Biden Administration's DOT is more concerned with advancing the administration's progressive agenda than saving American lives. Nehls Votes NO on Appropriations Package On March 6, 2024, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 4366, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024. This appropriations package provides funding for federal departments and agencies through Fiscal Year (FY) 2024, which ends September 30, 2024, at reckless spending levels and continues the spending problem in Washington, D.C. Our nation is nearly $35 trillion in debt, our borders are wide open due to the failed policies of the Biden Administration, and the American people are suffering because of it. Our nation's taxpayers deserve better. Our country deserves better. The status quo must end. For these reasons, I voted NO on this appropriations package. Rep. Troy E. IRS.gov offers a variety of online tools to help taxpayers answer common tax questions. For example, taxpayers can search the Interactive Tax Assistant, Tax Topics and Frequently Asked Questions to find answers. IRS Free File provides eligible taxpayers who want to prepare their own returns free tax preparation and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offers free tax help from certified volunteers at thousands of sites across the country. The IRS provides a checklist to help taxpayers as they prepare to file their 2023 tax returns, which can be found HERE. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition. The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and is open to all high school students in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas. The winning artwork of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, and receive two plane tickets to Washington, D.C.
