“Uncommitted” to Biden – Committed to Solidarity with Working Class People Around the World

This week, 100,000 voters in the Michigan Democratic primaries expressed their growing anger and frustration at the Biden administration’s utter refusal to stop the slaughter of Palestinians, which has grown to over 30,000 killed, by voting “uncommitted.”  Here in Washington, the 50,000-workers strong UFCW 3000 — the largest union in the state — endorsed the uncommitted campaign!

The vast, overwhelming majority of the Democratic Party Establishment continues to actively support and fund the Israeli apartheid regime and its war against the people of Gaza. Seattle DSA recently organized an occupation of Democratic Party Representative Adam Smith’s office to demand he support a ceasefire, which he has refused.  Adam Smith, like the majority of Democrats, greedily accepts money from war industries and AIPAC — in fact they were the biggest contributors to his election campaigns!

Moreover, Biden and the Democratic Party Establishment have refused to fight for a $15 hour minimum wage, cancel all student debt, codify abortion rights or lift a finger to effectively defend trans rights, which has enflamed working people, particularly young people.

Seattle DSA fully supports the “uncommitted” campaign. We encourage working people in Washington State to vote uncommitted on their primary ballots, which have begun to arrive to voters. Ballots need to be dropped off or mailed by March 12 — the day of the Washington State primaries.

Unfortunately, for your vote to count, you must tick the box  “uncommitted delegates” and check a box on the outside of your ballot envelope that declares that the Democrats are your “preferred party.” While encouraging working people to register their protest in this one election, Seattle DSA believes the Democratic Party is, at its core, a party of big business and war.

While we don't like to call to check this box (to call the Democrats our preferred party) to be able to vote in this primary, it is a tactical step to be able to oppose the Democratic Party's agenda of the war on Gaza. We believe this will make the growing resistance on the left against Biden and this ongoing war visible — not bring people into or closer to the Democrats. For us – and many others – this is about building toward an alternative to right-wing Republicans and Wall Street Democrats.

As one of the organizers of the “uncommitted” campaign in Michigan told
NPR (Feb 27):

"We're experiencing a revolution," said Lexis Zeidan, a 31-year-old Palestinian American organizer who is a spokeswoman for the Listen to Michigan campaign.

"You're going to have your older generation that might still understand or believe in this two-party system," she said. "But you're also having younger voters that are trying so many different strategies and ways ... to upend the current electoral system and let elected officials know that we're not settling for this anymore."

"We're no longer going for the lesser of two evils," she added.

To be clear: Seattle DSA stands for a new political party that represents the interests of working people — a party for the millions, not the millionaires and billionaires! We are fighting right-wing Republicans and Wall Street Democrats. There is a real threat by Donald Trump and his anti-immigrant, racist, misogynist and anti-worker agenda. Trump is the greater evil. However, we are fed up with how the lesser evil – Joe Biden – with his imperialist, pro-capitalist policies is preparing the ground for a return of Trump to the White House.

We need a democratic socialist force on all levels. We need a new mass working class party. The best way to prepare for that  is to join DSA today!
