Director's Report
Jade Piros de Carvalho
KOBD is springing forward as February comes to a close. The application windows for both digital opportunity programs, supporting device distribution, digital skills training and free public Wi-Fi options have closed. I encourage you to review the applications and provide comments. Public comment for Advancing Digital Opportunities to Promote Technology (ADOPT) is available here and Digital Opportunities to Connect Kansas (DOCK) will be available for public comment on March 7, here.?
Throughout March and April, KOBD will host Regional Planning Workshops to help communities engage providers in the BEAD process. We encourage you to join a meeting, read the playbook, reach out to the providers in your area, and understand how you can be good partners in this work. Learn more here.??
An unexpected win was the announcement that KOBD would receive nearly $1 million from the USDA Technical Assistance grant to support engineering surveys to understand barriers to expand broadband to rural communities. Much like our Regional Planning efforts, this grant is designed to provide community driven conversations about connectivity solutions in historically disconnected areas of the state. KOBD received 10% of the nationwide funding for this work.?
The Digital Equity Capacity Notice of Funding Opportunity is expected to be released in late March. KOBD will continue the work we have been doing to implement the Digital Equity Strategic Plan. When Kansans can access, afford, and adopt (use) the internet, we all win.??
