Hi John,
It's March, and we've had a whole month of sewage pollution alerts non-stop (and that's just for those of us in the UK that actually see the data out of season).
Last week, Ofwat warned [[link removed]] that non-compliance in the water industry is so widespread that if it fully enforced the law, water companies would fail. What a Sh๐ฉtshow.
๐ Shocking news [[link removed]] that the government will YET AGAIN be delaying the Deposit Return Scheme UNTIL 2028 as they pander to the pressure of industry lobbyists.
We worked behind the scenes on Joe Lycett's sewage scandal documentary for months, and it finally came out last week. Well worth a watch [[link removed]], and look out for our Science and Research Officer, Eva.
๐จ Date for the diary - Election watch: 26th March is the last day the government can call a Spring general election. We'll know this month if we're going to get a UK general election in the first half of the year.
OUT TODAY: Our collaborative report with Blue Marine Foundation and Project Seagrass reveals how the current sewage pollution crisis is damaging our ability to fight climate change.
Evidence in the report clearly shows that the UK water quality crisis is impacting the ability of seagrass meadows to mitigate the threat of climate change. It reveals that poor water quality, mainly from sewage discharges, livestock waste, and excess fertiliser use, has the devastating potential to turn seagrass from a carbon sink into a carbon source.

Take a look ๐ [[link removed]]
๐ฉ This year, we've already had a total of 3,874 SEWAGE POLLUTION ALERT [[link removed]]S across the UK

๐จ27 potential swim-spots to get more water quality testing in England
We're celebrating. Defra launched a public consultation this week for 27 potential new designated bathing sites. Most of these new bathing sites were applied for by communities who are battling to improve the water quality of their local river, lake or beach. These communities are one step closer to having their well-loved swim spots designated as a bathing water, which means more testing and accountability for water quality.
Our Protecting Wild Waters [[link removed]] campaign equips communities with the tools they need to apply for designated bathing water status. And we're there every step of the way to protect our wild waters, like this one ๐ that might be approved this year. But what's next?
We now need to get these applications approved by Defra.
You can help show your support by responding to the consultation for as many of the bathing sites as you wish. We've put together some advice here [[link removed]] for how to complete your response. You don't need to be local to the area.
The deadline to respond is the 10th March. Here's the consultation [[link removed]].

Big Green Hike [[link removed]]
The Big green Hike is a nationwide sponsored walk - on 6th and 7th April - that anyone can take part in. If you're more of a land-dweller than a sea-swimmer, this challenge is for you.
It's free to enter. No matter where you live. Whether one mile, or thirty. The distance, format, or location isn't what matters. What really counts is you showing up for the environment, having fun outside, and raising ocean-saving funds. Are you in?
