Rep. Troy E. Nehls Sends Follow-Up Letter to DHS Secretary Mayorkas Regarding Venezuelan Prisoners Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Sends Follow-Up Letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Regarding Venezuelan Prisoners I sent a follow-up letter, along with three of my Republican colleagues, to U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas regarding the recent wave of violent crimes being carried out across America by illegal aliens from Venezuela. In the letter, I urge Secretary Mayorkas to prevent Venezuelans from entering our interior and immediately deport those who have been released pending immigration proceedings. On September 22, 2022, I sent a letter to Secretary Mayorkas regarding a report received by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that instructed agents to look for violent criminals from Venezuela entering the United States. The report allegedly indicated that the Venezuelan regime, under the control of Nicolás Maduro Moros, was releasing violent criminals from prison early, including inmates convicted of “murder, rape, and extortion.” I never received a response from Secretary Mayorkas. Over a year later, Venezuelan aliens are now wreaking havoc in cities across the United States. The policies of Secretary Mayorkas and the Biden Administration have encouraged criminals from all over the world, including Venezuelan nationals, to invade our country, resulting in robberies, assaults, and deaths of American citizens. Our nation’s foreign adversaries know that our country is weak, and they are taking advantage of our wide-open borders. It is past time Secretary Mayorkas and President Joe Biden take action to deter violent criminals from crossing our border and deport every single illegal alien they have released into our country, states, and communities, especially the criminals from Venezuela. Make no mistake, the blood of every single American who has died due to crimes committed by illegal aliens is on the hands of Secretary Mayorkas, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden Administration. Nehls Attends House Judiciary Committee Markup The House Judiciary Committee held a markup this week to advance three pieces of legislation regarding government accountability and transparency. The committee advanced H.R. 4848, the Censorship Accountability Act, which would empower Americans to sue federal officials who violate their First Amendment rights. I proudly voted in favor of this legislation. The House Judiciary Committee also advanced H.R. 2595, the Forfeiture Funds Expenditure Transparency Act, which would require state and local law enforcement agencies that receive forfeited property or funds from the federal government through equitable sharing to report the details of each receipt of property or funds and the activity to which it was directed. The American people should know how state and local law enforcement agencies spend funds received from the federal government and how those funds are directed to be spent. H.R. 7335, the Transparency in National Security Threat Act, was also passed by the House Judiciary Committee. This legislation would require the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to report to Congress every encounter they have with an illegal alien who is listed on the terrorist screening database. Since President Joe Biden has been in office, over 340 individuals whose names appear on the terrorist watchlist have been stopped trying to cross the southern border. This is absolutely unacceptable, and all due to the open-border policies of the Biden Administration. Nehls Votes Against Short-Term CR This week, the United States House of Representatives passed a short-term continuing resolution (CR), which extends Biden-Pelosi spending levels for four appropriations bills until March 8, 2024, and the remaining eight appropriations bills until March 22, 2024. The American people continue to suffer due to the policies of Joe Biden and his administration. Since Joe Biden took office, over 8.7 million illegal aliens have crossed our borders nationwide, and inflation is up 17.9%. We cannot continue the Swamp’s status quo. It’s long past time to rein in wasteful government spending and seriously address the crises that the Biden Administration has willfully created. We cannot continue to kick the can down the road, which is why I voted ‘NO’ on this short-term CR. This Week in TX-22 Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress This week, my District Director, retired Master Sergeant Barbara Spruill, presented 11 stories of Veterans from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas, as well as the remarkable 150-page memoir of Ben M. McGlothlin, who was a B17 pilot in World War II, at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as part of the Veterans History Project (VHP). The VHP at the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the firsthand recollections of U.S. military Veterans who served in World War I through the more recent conflicts and peacekeeping missions, so that future generations may hear directly from Veterans and better understand what they saw, did and felt during their service. The stories of these service members will forever be preserved in the archives of the Library of Congress for future generations. As a Veteran myself, I would like to thank every Veteran who served our great nation. IRS.gov offers a variety of online tools to help taxpayers answer common tax questions. For example, taxpayers can search the Interactive Tax Assistant, Tax Topics and Frequently Asked Questions to find answers. IRS Free File provides eligible taxpayers who want to prepare their own returns free tax preparation and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offers free tax help from certified volunteers at thousands of sites across the country. The IRS provides a checklist to help taxpayers as they prepare to file their 2023 tax returns, which can be found HERE. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition. The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and is open to all high school students in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas.
