Expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare is one of my top priorities, and I want to tell you why and what I’ve done to address our childcare crisis.

Growing up in a single-parent working-class household, I saw the struggle for affordable childcare firsthand. After school and on weekends, my dad would bring my sister and I to city hall and the fire station where he worked because it was difficult to find and afford child care. Later, as a mother of three small boys, my dad was diagnosed with early-onset dementia. I cared for him in our home as I struggled to find affordable childcare and adult care.

Washington state, like many states, has a childcare crisis. Too many families are being forced to choose between working or staying home because childcare is either not available or affordable. This is not just an economic crisis but a social crisis. Research tells us that a child’s early years are paramount and can set the stage for the rest of their lives. Tackling the high cost of childcare is one of the best investments we can make in America’s future - setting kids up for success and helping their parents stay in the workforce and provide better opportunities for their families.

As Commissioner of Public Lands, I manage millions of acres of land that generate critical funding for K-12 education. Recognizing our childcare crisis and that a child’s education starts long before kindergarten, this year, I championed a bill that would provide dedicated funding to meet our childcare crisis while also protecting our environment. In Congress, I am committed to championing affordable childcare and lifting up working families and childcare workers. But I need your support to make this vision a reality.
