Friends,

TX02 is my home, and there is nothing better than being with fellow Texans. After a successful trip to Mexico City for my Task Force on Combating Mexican Drug Cartels, I was very happy to spend the week in Texas.

This past week I had a number of events where I had the opportunity to hear from business, community and education leaders from across the District. I was also able to speak with high school students in Kingwood and celebrate the completion of the Kingwood High School flood mitigation project.

Sincerely,

Kingwood High School Flood Mitigation Project

This week, I joined representatives from Humble ISD, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to highlight the completion of the flood mitigation project that was 90% federally funded. Through this federal assistance, FEMA, Harris County Flood Control District, Humble ISD and the TDEM were able to protect the school from future flood disasters.

Speaking at Kingwood High School

One of my favorite events to do is speaking to High School students. At Kingwood HS, I had the opportunity to speak about leadership, commitment and determination.

At Partnership Lake Houston, I was able to hear from community and business leaders in the area and deliver an update on activities in Washington, DC, including our recent vote in the House to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, the government funding deadlines we face when I return to Washington, and prospects for passing border security reforms to stop the flow of illegal immigration at our southern border.

UPDATE: Task Force to Combat Mexican Drug Cartels

Image

I recently returned from Mexico City where I led a delegation interested in the Task Force to Combat Mexican Drug Cartels.

As Chairman, I led the task force to Mexico City to meet with U.S. government representatives, think tanks, and Mexican government officials to learn what we are doing to combat cartels and what we can do better.

This is critically important because Mexican drug cartels are the #1 threat to America today, killing 80,000 Americans a year with deadly fentanyl overdoses.

Since the task force began in July 2023, we’ve been briefed by the President of Ecuador, former Attorney General Bill Barr, former Acting Homeland Secretary Chad Wolf, experts from Customs and Border Protection, Drug Enforcement Agency, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Until now, Congress has failed to focus on this issue. While many government agencies battle the cartel problem every day, there is no strategy or direction from the White House or Congress. We aim to change that. Read more about our efforts here.

Later this year we will travel to Colombia and get a better understanding of what lessons can be learned from 30 years of close security cooperation with the United States that helped bring the country back from the brink of collapse.

Social Security Tax Information

Image
Social Security benefits are taxable. If you receive Social Security, be on the lookout for your Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or
SSA-1042S, a tax form the IRS mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on their tax return.

If you misplace your Benefit Statement, you can instantly get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account. Replacement tax forms for the previous tax year are generally available beginning February 1 of each year.
