Minnesota Families Rally Behind Senator Maye Quade’s Bill to Require Insurance Companies to Cover Infertility Treatment |
Minnesotans who struggled with infertility and being able to afford treatment packed a room at the State Capitol on Wednesday, some carrying their babies, to support legislation that would require health plans to provide coverage for infertility treatment. Minnesota would be the 22nd state to require insurance providers to help cover the high cost of infertility treatment if the DFL-controlled Legislature passes the bill. The proposal would require insurance companies to cover up to four egg retrievals and unlimited implantations.

Alabama Supreme Court Rules Frozen Embryos are ‘Children’ |
Alabama’s Supreme Court has ruled that frozen embryos are children under state law and subject to legislation dealing with the wrongful death of a minor, stating that it “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.” The court issued this majority decision in a lawsuit brought forth by a group of in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients whose frozen embryos were destroyed in December 2020 when a patient removed the embryos from a cryogenic storage unit and dropped them on the ground.
Though the court’s decision does not prohibit IVF, it’s the first known case in which a US court says frozen embryos are human beings, and that could have profound impacts on how the fertility industry operates, and bring about similar lawsuits around the country, including states like Minnesota, where anti-choice groups are seeking to reverse changes to recent gains in reproductive freedom. |
