John, what would you consider a moral obscenity?

How about Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans allowing the American Rescue Plan ’s expanded Child Tax Credit funding to expire — knowing full well that this Democratic policy and tax cut for the middle class was reducing child poverty by 43 percent ?

It helped parents afford rent. Pay utilities. Buy food and diapers.

In the time since Republicans let this policy expire, a New York Times investigation found that “about a quarter of Black babies and toddlers in rental households face the threat of eviction in a typical year… all children are disproportionately at risk. ”

The Times’ headline read “The Americans Most Threatened by Eviction: Young Children.”

It’s not every day that the positive effect of a policy is so immediately clear — but in the case of the Child Tax Credit, it is.

Babies need diapers. Growing children need bigger clothes. No child should go hungry. And a child should not be the most likely person in America to face eviction.

It is ridiculous that this even needs to be debated!

But Mitch McConnell and his allies took away the biggest middle-class tax cut in a generation that parents were using to help clothe their children and put food on the table.

I’m fighting to restore the expanded Child Tax Credit. NO child should fear losing their home, going cold, or going hungry — but unbelievably, some of my Republican colleagues still disagree. Add your name to my petition calling on the Senate to make this a TOP priority. [[link removed]]

I will never stop working to bridge the divides that too often prevent legislation from being passed.

A just, loving country must ensure that every child is cared for. That’s what we’re fighting for.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
