Dear John,

Today, the BBC told the stories ([link removed]) of some of the many women who have faced investigation for "illegal" abortions in England & Wales. These stories are harrowing, and they are on the rise.

Women are being taken into police custody straight from the hospital, facing years-long investigations, their properties searched, blood samples taken without consent, and people shouting "baby-killer." All for having an abortion.

Now, more than ever, we need your help.

In a matter of weeks, your MP will have the chance to end the threat of police investigations, prosecution, and prison time for women who end their pregnancies. By emailing your MP to support Dame Diana Johnson MP's amendment - you have the opportunity to change the course of history for women across England & Wales.

England & Wales have the most severe punishment for an “illegal” abortion in the world – up to life imprisonment. This is worse than places with severe anti-abortion laws such as Texas, Afghanistan, and South Sudan. We are on the wrong side of history.

In the lead up to the vote over the coming weeks we will be launching our campaign across social media. Because it's #TimeToAct.

As part of our campaign you can expect to see a series of social media graphics, videos and stories to raise awareness of the devastating impact these cruel, outdated laws are having. We've put together a social media pack that we encourage you to share to help us send the message that these laws need to be changed urgently.

As part of our campaign in the lead up to the vote, we will be sharing anonymised stories from women whose lives have been impacted by our cruel and outdated abortion laws.

We will roll these out on BPAS social media from tomorrow. But for now, here's a preview of Laura's* story below.

In the lead up to the vote, we will be getting out there and making as much noise as possible. This will include advertising and sponsored social media posts in order to get our message in front of decision-makers.

We know times are difficult for many, but, if you are able to, please consider making a one-off donation to our fighting fund or pledge to support our work with a monthly donation.

Your Story Matters

At BPAS, we aim to create a future where every woman is empowered to make her own decisions about pregnancy.

Sharing your experience can inspire and help other people feel less alone.

Whether it be your experience having an abortion, whether you faced harassment outside the clinic, through to your stories about contraception - how you're navigating contraceptive choice and whether you faced any barriers in accessing emergency contraception. Your story matters, and we want to hear them all.
SHARE YOUR STORY HERE ([link removed])

Over the coming weeks in the lead up to the vote, please spread the word.

Have those staffroom conversations. Be that person that gets everyone to email their MP at brunch. Because every conversation counts.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Best wishes,

The team at BPAS
