john,

As a doctor, Black History Month is more than a history lesson. It's a time to celebrate Black Americans' impact on our country. It's also a time to remember our country's history when it comes to fighting for equality and justice for every American, to celebrate the tremendous progress we’ve made in the past decades, and to think about how we can do better.

As a doctor, I've had a unique view of how disparities show up in our healthcare system. For example, the Black maternal mortality rate is nearly three times that of white women. In emergency medicine, researchers found that Black children with acute appendicitis were less likely than their white peers to receive painkillers. This is not okay, john.

As doctors, leaders, neighbors, and community members, we must all commit ourselves to doing better.

Thank you,

Kim
