No winner for this week’s mystery because while Dawn was correct, she has already won twice and Gary did not include the common name. Good efforts by all though!
Clitocybe nuda, commonly known as the Blewit or Wood Blewit and alternately described as Lepista nuda, is an edible mushroom native to Europe and North America. According to First Nature, Wood Blewits are bluish... at least when they are young. The caps, gills and stems are actually more of a violet color, but the cap surface soon loses its blue or violet coloration and turns ochre or tan from the center; however, the gills and stem invariably retain some of their their violaceous coloring even when fully mature. Perhaps surprisingly, Wood Blewits can be used to dye fabrics or paper a grass green color rather than lilac, purple or blue. To make a green dye chop up the fungi up and then boil them in water in an iron cooking pot. Learn more about mushrooms on February 27 at our webinar Identifying Mushrooms and Fungi with Matt Cohen.
